The natural predisposition of the territory, the ancient tradition and the mastery of the “cipollari”, therefore contribute to making the festival of Cannara one of the most important and awaited events in Umbria.
The key event of the September Cannarese, organized to coincide with the celebrations in honor of the patron Saint Matthew (September 21), offers: art and photographic exhibitions, moments of theater, musical entertainment, dance and folklore.
The possibility to taste unrivaled onion specialties, however, is the main reason why many participate in the party of Cannara. The six local taverns distributed in the city: “Il Giardino Fiorito”, “El Cipollaro”, “Al Cortile Antico”, “Il Pescatore”, “La Taverna del Castello” and “Il Rifugio del Cacciatore” propose an entire menu every evening based on onion, appetizers, first courses, main courses, side dishes and even desserts. The dishes are linked to the gastronomic traditions of Umbria in the past: penne with onion, cipollaro sausage, roasted onions, onion soup and onion-flavored donut, just to make watering mouth.
Along the streets of the village is set up a small market of typical products, where you can watch the ligation of onions and buy the characteristic “braids” of the three main varieties of onion Cannara: the Golden, the Flat and the Red, quest The last one, with its unmistakable red-copper skin, is by far the most delicious, delicate and sweet.
To this humble and apparently anonymous ingredient of Italian cuisine, more and more experts attribute countless therapeutic properties and entering one of the stands of the party you will be amazed at what dishes you can cook with it.
The Feast of the Onion of Cannara 2018 will take place from 4 September to 9 September and from 11 to 16 September, certainly one of the best times to visit Assisi and Umbria and, given the occasion, combine art and culture with tradition and food and wine.
